<image:title>One for the Road - One for the Road: An Anthology of Road Trip Writing</image:title>
<image:caption>When the Covid-19 pandemic sent much of the world into social isolation, it seemed like a good time to take on a group writing project, an opportunity to connect with relatives, friends, and friends of friends. And since most of us were stuck at home at the time, why not write about that great American pastime, the road trip? Hence, One for the Road: An Anthology of Road Trip Writing was conceived. You will find twenty-three road trip pieces within these pages, and the authors of the offerings range in age from twenty-six to eighty years-old. The stories here feature tales of cross-country trips, day trips, and even trips of the imagination. In addition to essays, original poetry and song lyrics are included in the collection. Speaking of songs, you will find a link to a Spotify Playlist at the back of the book, as well as a roster of the tunes on that playlist. All of the authors were invited to contribute to this list, and many of the songs included are referenced in the respective stories. Finally, all proceeds from the sale of One for the Road will be donated to local food relief efforts in the Charlottesville, Virginia area. Published 2020 Purchase: amazon.com</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gorowny and Me - Goronwy and Me</image:title>
<image:caption>Goronwy Owen (1723-1769) was a Welsh poet and clergyman who spent the last dozen years of his life in Virginia. As a poet, Owen is still revered in his native land as in his work he revived the ancient bardic meters of Welsh poetry. He lived in obscurity in Virginia, first in Williamsburg where he was the Master of the Grammar School at the College of William and Mary, and then in Brunswick County where he was the rector of St. Andrew's Parish. In Brunswick County, Owen wrote "Marwnad Lewys Morys Yswain" widely considered his second greatest poem. Goronwy and Me: A Narrative of Two Lives traces Owen's tempestuous life from his humble beginnings in Wales to his last years in Virginia. Throughout the narrative, Proal Heartwell explores the many intersections between his own life and that of the exiled bard. Goronwy and Me is not a typical biography, but rather a conversation between the author and the reader on the life of a remarkable Welshman. Published 2012 Purchase: amazon.com</image:caption>

<image:title>In Beauty It Is Finished - In Beauty It Is Finished: Reflections on the life and work of Oliver La Farge</image:title>
<image:caption>In Beauty It Is Finished: Reflections on the Life and Work of Oliver La Farge is a hybrid biography of an American author best known for his novel Laughing Boy, winner of the 1930 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. A member of a prominent American family, La Farge's canon of 24 books is equally divided between fiction and nonfiction, and most of his work examines Native American life and culture. In Beauty It Is Finished is divided into four sections, each of which details La Farge's life in a specific locale: New England, New Orleans, New York, and New Mexico. The book also contains a Preface in which author Proal Heartwell examines the systemic racism of the Virginia of his youth. In particular, he looks at textbooks of the era and their depictions of Native American life. In the Afterword of the text, Mr. Heartwell explores works of contemporary Native American literature, and he compares the themes of these modern books with motifs found in La Farge's work. <image:caption>It is the summer of 1927 when freshly-minted college graduate Robert Martin moves to the small Southside Virginia town of Lawrenceville. There, he takes up residence in the boarding house operated by widow Louvenia Hicks with help from her teenage daughter, Laura. Over the course of the next year, Robert is enmeshed in the lives of the Hicks family and his fellow boarders, as well as those of the citizens—Black and white—of the broader community. With humor and pathos, The Boarding House explores the intricate fabric of life of an American town in the days just before the Great Depression. Published 2024 Purchase: amazon.com</image:caption>
